"No," Sidney was haste to correct Olivia when the detective made a claim that he was still in servitude to another monarch after the previous one passed away. "I'm with Regina because I chose to be at her side. I am hers because I'm afraid none of us can decide who we love."
He stared at his half-empty cup, "And sometimes, even when we tell ourselves we can walk away, the same love pulls us back in or finds a way to hold us captive again."
When he looked up to watch Olivia next, he definitely picked up her benign skepticism wafting from where she sat. He didn't think much of it; the story did sound made-up, and he got the sense it wasn't the most original either.
One might say it was universal.
"On the contrary," he said, "Regina was rather fond of Snow White. She saved the girl during their first meeting when the young princess' horse went wild during a visit to a village. Regina happened to be an excellent rider and was able to rescue the girl before she got injured or worse."
Sidney smiled in fond recollection before that expression turned grim in an instant.
"For all Snow White's charms, her greatest fault was her innocence. The princess failed to understand the intricacies of the heart and ended up announcing a secret which got the man Regina loved killed."
He finished the rest of his coffee, ignoring how most of the liquid scalded the roof of his mouth. "My sweet queen tried her best to forgive little Snow, you see, but the resentment only grew over the years when it was obvious that her father still favored the daughter over his own second wife. In addition to a loveless marriage, Regina had to keep sharing a palace with the very girl responsible for her old boyfriend's death."
Sidney paused as his voice changed, "But neither of this set her off to a dark path, as you put it. She was still willing to forgive and entrap herself in this royal marriage for as long as her spirit could bear...alas, though, this is as far as I can say. Ultimately, Regina should be telling the story her own."
Slowly, he rose to his feet.
"Shall we go for a stroll? And then you can tell me something about yourself. I'm...especially intrigued by the man you called Giles. Who was he to you? And what role did he play in this godforsaken town?"

Olivia
Olivia can’t stifle a groan when Sidney continues his tale. Of course it’s all about the oldest bane in the history of the world: love. Love for someone who doesn’t love you back, love for someone you shouldn’t love, love for someone who doesn’t deserve love. With everything humankind has overcome in the stretch of centuries, this tale always stays the same.
She is pretty sure that she’s heard enough, and these glimpses of another Regina don’t really spark her sympathy for the Mayor. However, it heightens her sympathy for Sidney. That man who is caught in his love for someone who has gone to darkness, almost ripped apart by his feelings and loyalties.
“Okay then. You show me yours, I show you mine I guess.”
She’s taking her jacket from the back of the chair and throws it over her shoulders, then hastily gulps down the rest of the coffee before opening the door, letting the cool morning air hit her right in the face.
“Giles.” she starts, then follows it by a long pause. It has been years since she has last talked about Rupert, and even though she had never forgotten the man, she had quite well managed to put memories of him in a pretty little box in the back of her head. As long as she had been outside of Sunnydale. Now it’s all starting to come back.
“I’ve told you about the Chosen Ones. Slayers, they are called. And no, I’m not one of them. Every Slayer though has a Watcher, one who trains them, watches over them, pushes them to their limits. Rupert Giles was a Watcher.”
It hurts to speak of him in past tense. And yet from everything she knows he is dead now. And every thought of it being a lie is just a foolish notion of a girl in love. There. Again. In the end everything is about love, isn’t it?
“But his Slayer has been turned and dragged to the dark side, and so….a Watcher was no longer needed.”
Her stroll had taken her to the Espresso Pump, drawn in by the promise of more caffeine. Despite the morning hours, the cafe was already open, and a couple of tables were placed on the sidewalk for people who appreciated the early morning hours in Sunnydale, just after the sun had risen and the vampires had gone to their lairs.

Sunnydale looked like any other town during mornings, which was a darkly amusing observation to make when one stops to consider the heinous activities that run rampant during its nocturnal hours.
He walked side by side with Olivia like they’re just another pair of colleagues. In what probably was a product of loneliness, he even fancied during that short stroll that they were fellow detectives, fighting crime to save the town. It’s so silly. If Regina was here and he dared express this, she might consider him even more of a fool.
But alas, her queen was back in that new home she constructed for herself, possibly deciding on her next mayoral decree while standing in the kitchen. She was, after all, serious about the invitation of a home-cooked dinner later.
Sidney’s steps slowed down for a pace or so as soon as he recognized that tiny squeal of pain from Olivia regarding a man she had loved and grieved. Without realizing it, he reached to squeeze her shoulder in belated condolence before withdrawing rather awkwardly.
“Slayer?” he quipped a moment later as he filed that for later use where his queen might be concerned. “Sounds rather…baroque? What sort of power does a Slayer wield? And your man—this Mr. Giles—sound formidable on his own. Was he a magician? Does the Slayer possess magic?”
He stopped talking only to perk up at the possibility of getting more coffee for himself. Maybe even a pastry.
“It’s been…a while since I possessed corporeal form, and my god how I’ve missed food and drink!” he laughed at the mundane silliness of it. As his gaze looked through the glass counter where cakes and cookies were found, he decided to disclose something more personal to Olivia this time.
“I don’t know how much of it I could take,” he said, “How much I could stand by while she destroys the last shred of humanity she still has. Because whether you believe it or not, Regina can be saved.”
He looked directly into the detective’s eyes, “And I’m going to prove it to you tonight. I’m going to argue on your behalf and make her surrender the enchanted claim on your heart.”
Sidney then straightened and fixed his tie. He didn’t care if she believed him. Actions, after all, seal character.
