Guillaume:
His every thought is focused on the building before him and what information he might gather from it. He has a talent for noticing details that escape others, and this sets him apart from other good men of the police force. His colleagues might disagree on that, but Guillaume’s confidence is hard to shatter.
“Remember, I’m your brother from Europe. Not a word about Lucy’s murder to anyone.” he whispers to his companion, reminding her of the agreement they had made. Entering the boarding house Mina and Lucy had dwelt in as a detective would stir too much panic and confusion, even threaten the open case. Entering as Mina’s….gentleman visitor would be frowned upon in this reputable house. And even though Mina knows that under no circumstances would Guillaume be a threat to Mina’s virtue-- him secretly being in love with a man - it’s not something you discuss openly.
The moment they’ve stepped through the door, a somewhat sturdy and stern matron is coming towards them, and Guillaume instantly flashes his brightest and most charming smile.
“Enchanté!” he exclaims, then reaches for the matron’s hand to take it ever so gently in his, bows forward and releases but a slight hint of breath on the back of her hand.
“Mina has told me so much about you, how you keep order and virtue in this house, giving the women here both a steady hand and a warm home.”
The matron seems perplexed yet flattered, but not yet sure what to make of the man before him.
“Oh, mi dispace! How clumsy of me, I should introduce myself. I am Mina’s brother, back from Europe from a long trip of cultural richness. I am so happy to finally be back with my beloved sister again, and we have so much to catch up with. ¡Disculpe!”
And with these words he pushes past her toward the flight of stairs, leaving a somewhat puzzled and enchanted matron behind.
